Banyan Massachusetts Team
Matt Ganem is a poet and the author of “The Shadow of an Addict.” He also hosts Banyan Recovery Radio and speaks to different schools, recovery programs, and community forums on addiction. He is a huge voice for recovery not only in his hometown of Massachusetts, but nationwide.
Oxycontin which eventually led to Heroin addiction brought him to rock bottom at the age of 21. He was able to turn his life around and now tries to provide hope and strength to those still sick and struggling with substance abuse. Matt works relentlessly to help others escape the grasp of addiction by shining a positive light on recovery. He does this by speaking at schools and community events for prevention education. His work was recognized by Massachusetts Organization of Addiction and Recovery and Matt was selected to be Massachusetts Recovery Advocate of the Year in 2015.
Matt Ganem a father of two beautiful children Christian and Payton and has been clean for over 10 years.
Margaret “Maggie” Saunders, M Ed.
Maggie Saunders holds a Master’s of Education degree in Mental Health Counseling with a specialized focus in addiction services and trauma work from Cambridge College. She has experience working with patients struggling with both severe mental health disorders as well as substance use disorder, and has been working in the field for more than five years. Her therapeutic philosophy is based in client-centered therapy and behavior modification through a cognitive approach. Maggie believes in meeting each patient where they are in terms of their recovery and working to develop alternate and harm reducing coping skills to enable them to succeed.
Rob Gonzalez, LADC II
Rob Gonzalez has been working in the field of behavioral health care since 1996, and received his LADC II certification in 2000. Rob has personal experience with addiction recovery with more than 27 years sober, and believes in taking the time to listen to each individual client, empowering them to have a voice and find hope and recovery.
Business Development Representative
Tom Goris was born and raised in Long Island, New York and has been working in the field of addiction recovery since 2015. He is in long-term recovery from addiction himself, and entered the field after working in the corporate world because of his passion to pay forward what had been given to him. He is certified in the ARISE Intervention model and his main goal is to help the individuals, families, and communities that have been affected by addiction. Tom holds a BS in Criminal Justice from Buffalo State College and has been with the Banyan team since 2018.
Alia Albeer holds a BA in English literature from Columbia University and a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lesley University. She is in long-term recovery with nearly 20 years sober and currently serves as a Primary Therapist at Banyan Massachusetts. Alia was born in Baghdad, Iraq and has lived all over the world, including: London, Rome, Kuwait, New York City, Phoenix, and now Massachusetts. She specializes in trauma and addiction therapy and has been part of the Banyan team since 2018.
Cody Desmond currently serves as a Case Manager at Banyan Massachusetts, after starting his career at the company as a Behavioral Health Technician in 2018. He has personal experience in addiction recovery and states that his main goal is to enable patients to find success in sobriety. He is therefore heavily involved in patients after-care planning while they are in our care and believes in taking a hands-on approach to patient involvement throughout the entire course of treatment, ensuring that each individual’s needs are properly met. Cody believes that using compassion, support, guidance, and experience is key to addressing the underlying causes of addiction and to the treatment of substance use disorder.
Danielle Visone was born and raised in Middleton, MA and is in long-term recovery from addiction. Danielle graduated from Salem State College with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a minor in Social Work. Danielle then went to Cambridge College where she graduated with a Masters of Education in Mental Health Counseling with specialized focus in addiction services and trauma work. She has worked at Banyan as a Primary Therapist since October 2018. Danielle is a Certified Family-Focused Interventionist (CFI) and utilizes an empathetic and holistic approach when working with clients. She has a passion for alternative therapy and is Reiki I and Reiki II certified.
Joseph Papa, MSW, CADC-II
Joseph Papa holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of New Hampshire and is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. He specializes in treating patients suffering from trauma, substance use disorder, and co-occurring disorders. He has been working as a therapist for more than 22 years in both private and community settings, psychiatric hospitals, and private practice. Joe combines his extensive knowledge of clinical treatment with his personal experience of addiction recovery to bring a multi-layered, individualized approach when treating patients. He utilizes therapeutic approaches including: CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused Therapy, believing that it is essential to capitalize on each patient’s individual strengths to male realistic and lasting changes in their recovery journeys.
Debra Rooklin, M Ed., LMHC, LADC I
Debra Rooklin is a new member of the Banyan Massachusetts family, having started as the Clinical Director in March 2019. She holds a Master’s degree in Clinical and Community Counseling and has been working in the field of mental health and substance abuse services since the 1980s. Debra believes that to help just one person succeed in recovery is priceless and values compassion; she believes these values are reflected at Banyan Mass when she attends alumni nights and sees the room packed with former patients who are maintaining their sobriety and living happy, healthy lives.
Alison Goodliss is a Case Manager who has been with the Banyan Massachusetts team since 2016. She began her career at Banyan as a Behavioral Health Technician and was thereafter promoted to her current position of Case Manager. Alison is in long-term recovery from addiction. She believes in working with each patient on an individual basis to address their unique needs in the most effective and appropriate manner in order to enable them to be successful in recovery.
Melanie Draleau was born and raised in Massachusetts and has been in recovery from opiate abuse for more than ten years. For the past three years she has worked in the field of addiction treatment at Banyan Massachusetts and is a certified Reiki practitioner.

Michael Leggiero has held several positions at Banyan Massachusetts, having been promoted multiple times due to his hard work and dedication to helping patients. Michael began his career at Banyan as a Behavioral Health Technician and was then promoted to Case Manager and Community Outreach Treatment Advisor. He provides educational services to patients, conducts in-services, and tours of the facility. He is a Certified Recovery Coach, has more than seven years in recovery from addiction, and speaks on public forums such as jails and treatment centers throughout the state of Massachusetts to help raise awareness of addiction recovery resources.
Michael Orlando, BSW
Michael “Mikey O” Orlando has been working in the field of substance abuse treatment for more than ten years and has been with Banyan Massachusetts since 2016, immediately following the facility’s opening. He believes in creating a family-like atmosphere that carries over to group therapy and one-on-one sessions, showing each patient compassion and understanding. Michael has previously worked with the homeless population, in the field of community stabilization, and as a Case Worker at the Lynn Shelter Association.
Richard Evans was born and raised in Massachusetts and has been working in the field of addiction treatment since 2011. He is currently a Certified Recovery Coach and has a deep passion for being of service to those who are struggling. He has been with the Banyan team since 2016 and currently serves as a Case Manager.
